Three hours later Rosa and I had managed to clear the spindle and start on the online orders. At that point, I had to take my noon break and leave with Marco.

“Hey, sugar plum, how’s it going?” Marco said as I slid into his car. He handed me a white paper bag.

“We had a very productive, busy morning.” I opened the bag and sniffed. “I smell swiss cheese.”

“A hot ham and cheese sandwich,” he said, smiling at me, “with spicy mustard, just like you like.”

“Yum. I’m starving.” I opened the wrapper and took a bite.

“Do you have the photos?”

I patted my purse. “They’re right here on my phone.”

Ten minutes later we entered the apartment complex and pulled into the parking lot. I took my last bite of sandwich, wiped my mouth with a napkin, crumpled the wrapper, and stuck everything in the paper bag.

I checked my teeth in the visor mirror and slid the strap of my purse onto my shoulder. “Let’s do it.”

We apologized to Carol for intruding again, but she seemed pleased to have company. She led us to her living room where we all took seats.

“We’d like to show you two photos,” I said, “to see if you can identify the man and woman you saw in the hallway the evening of Kim’s death.”

“I’d be happy to help.”

I took out my phone and pulled up the first photo. “Do you see the blonde woman here?”

She studied the photo then pointed at one of two blondes. “This is the woman I saw.”

I showed Marco the woman she had selected. It wasn’t Felicity. I pointed to Felicity’s picture. “Are you sure this isn’t the woman you saw?”

Carol looked back and forth between the two faces. “I had only a momentary glimpse but I’m sure it’s the other one.”

I scrolled to the photo of the surgeons and showed Carol. She didn’t hesitate at all. “This is the man. Doesn’t he look like a movie star? He looks like an actor I see all the time on the Hallmark movies.”

I didn’t need to show Marco that time. It was Blake Ryder.

As Carol walked us to the door she said, “I’ve been going over and over that evening in my mind and I remembered something I hadn’t told you about before. It was a loud noise that sounded like it came from across the hall.”

“What kind of noise?” Marco asked as I took out the notebook.

“Like a loud bump, like something heavy fell on the floor.”

“Do you remember what time that was?” he asked.

“As I recall, my favorite game show was on, so it was between six-thirty and seven o’clock. I muted the TV to listen, but I didn’t hear anything after that.”

I wrote it down. “Thanks so much, Carol. You’ve been a big help.”

“I’m always here if you have any more questions.”

At the car, Marco unlocked the door and opened it for me. “You’re going to have to ask Nikki who the other blonde nurse is so we can talk to her.
